Do you also want to see the beautiful architecture and sculptures are ancestors have made and cant go visit the major caves like Ajanta and Ellora. You can visit them on a weekend as we have a few caves near Mumbai.

Kanheri Caves:

The Kanheri Caves consist of a group of rock-cut monuments that are located in Borivali on the western line of the Mumbai railways, Located within the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the caves are 6 km from the main gate and 7 km from Borivali Station. The Kanheri Caves demonstrate the Buddhist influence on the art and culture of India.

Elephanta Caves:

Elephanta caves consist of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, in South Mumbai, 10 kilometres to the east of the city of Mumbai. The island is located in the Arabian Sea and consists of two groups of caves—the first is a large group of five Hindu caves and the second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves.
The rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between the 5th and 8th centuries.

Karla caves:

 

The Karla Caves are a complex of ancient Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines located in Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The shrines were developed over the period – from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC, having arisen near a major ancient trade route, running eastward from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan.

Bhaje Caves:

Bhaje Caves is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC located in Pune, near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The caves are 400 feet above the village of Bhaje, The most impressive monument is the large shrine with an open, horseshoe-arched entrance, the large shrine is the most prominent aspect of the caves, and one of the earliest of the types.

Bedse Caves:

Bedse Caves are situated in Maval taluka, Pune District, Maharashtra, India. The history of the caves can be traced back up to 1st century BC. There are two main caves. The prayer hall with comparatively large stupa, the other cave is monastery. Both the caves contain some carvings although are less ornate. Both caves are facing eastwards so it is recommended to visit the caves early morning, as in sunlight the beauty of carvings is enhanced.
