Five things to do in Thimpu

After spending a night in Hotel Ghasel with temperatures as low as 3 degrees, the next day we were supposed to sight see Thimpu. But first we had to extend our Permits to head to Punakha the next day.
We reached the immigration center at Thimpu at around 9, where our driver cum Guide did all the paper work and then we left for sight-seeing as the documents would be taking time to be done.

Things to see in Thimpu:

The Football Stadium

Our first stop was the football stadium, Bhutan is currently building sports facilities around its cities so that the youth are occupied with something and do not get into drugs or other anti-social activities. We sent some time watching the local teams play and played with some of the locals before heading back to the Immigration center to collect the Permits for Punakha.

After collecting the permits, we head to the Buddha Dordenma statue which overlooks the City of Bhutan, it was built on the mountains of Bhutan to celebrate the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The statue was huge around 50mts and was one of the most beautiful places we had visited in Bhutan. After clicking a few pictures and exploring the temple complex we headed to learn more about the Bhutanese Culture.

Simply Bhutan

Simply Bhutan museum gives you an insight into the daily lives of traditional Bhutanese people. I was surprised to see that quite a few of Bhutanese habits and instruments match to the traditional devices used in rural India. As we entered the museum we were served some rice wine after which we were taken through the different cultures and habits that Bhutanese People followed. They showed us How they built their houses to how their Kitchens looked. The trip at Simply Bhutan ended with some Bhutanese Dance, some butter tea and a small archery session. In the small time at Simply Bhutan we learnt some many different things about Bhutan and how much similar we were with them.
After a tasty meal at one of the Indian restaurants in Bhutan we continued with our sightseeing and headed to a place where female monks AKA nuns used to stay.

Nunnery

Thangthong Dewachen Nunnery is a Buddhist monastery in the small Himalayan country of Bhutan. The nunnery is a few minutes’ drive from the town and is popularly known as the Zilukha Anim Dratshang. This place was unique as we had only seen places with Male Monks but here we had feamle Monks, they were very few and we heard that the intake in the nunnery was low as they were low on Space and infrastructure. After clicking a few pictures and exploring the place we headed back to the main city of Thimpu.

Thimpu Market

After reaching Thimpu we freshened up at our rooms before heading to the Thimpu market for some local shopping and spent time at the town square where there was a festival going on. After some dance, songs and games we headed to our hotel nearby for dinner before calling it a day as our next day was supposed to start early as we were going to Punakha.

What we spent in Thimpu

As we had booked a cab for all 7 days our travel was free, Entry fees to places were also not there. The only place where we spent money was on food and some shopping at the local Market.
